Ingredients:
Big onion - 3
Garlic - 3 to 4 pods
Pottu Kadalai / Fried Gram - 1 tablespoon
Chili powder - 1 spoon
Tamarind water
Jaggery
Salt
Preparation:
1. First in a mixie grind pottu kadalai.
2. Then add all other ingredients and grind. Adjust tamarind and jaggery as per your taste.
3. Don't grind it too coarsely or too smooth.
4. In a tadka pan, add a few spoons of oil (little extra oil) and splutter mustard seeds.
5. Pour it over the chutney and don't mix it immediately. Set aside for some time and then mix it.
6. Raw onion chutney is ready.
7. Since this chutney is raw it is slightly strong. Hence this chutney is usually smeared inside the dosa and served.
Notes:
1. Wash the onions well before grinding so that the bitterness is removed.
2. This onion chutney is slightly strong. So smear it inside the dosa so that it gets cooked slightly and hence the extra bitterness is lost.
